Joint Statement from Port Erin and Port St Mary Commissioners concerning proposed joint refuse collection arrangements

In October 2009 the Port Erin Commissioners invited representatives from the Southern Authorities to an open meeting to discuss the principle of setting up a joint southern refuse authority.  Various discussions have taken place during the last year but the majority of the authorities have decided to remain with their existing individual arrangements for the present time.  However further discussions and investigations continued into the possibility of amalgamating the refuse collection rounds for both Port Erin and Port St Mary.  Port Erin and Port St Mary Commissioners wish to announce that they have in principle agreed to progress a proposed joint collection service and to this end a trial is due to commence for a six week period commencing on 1st November 2010.  This will not affect the collection days of the Port St Mary residents but the areas in Port Erin that are currently collected on a Thursday are to be rescheduled and those affected will be notified shortly of their revised collection day.

The proposal will make considerable savings on the present operations to both authorities by sharing the costs of the day to day expenses and the capital cost involved in purchasing a new vehicle in the future.

The Authorities look forward to working together on this project to the benefit of their ratepayers.

South West Regeneration - we'd like your input

The South West Regeneration Committee is investigating ways to improve Port St Mary and Port Erin as places to live, work and visit.

This work will be used to put a bid into the Town and Village Regeneration Fund next year, and will include consideration of ways of linking the upper and lower parts of each village, signage and information, the visitor offer for tourists, as well as possible improvements to the harbours.

The vision for the project is for Port St Mary and Port Erin to become vibrant villages offering a range of retail outlets which meet the needs of the south of the Island and have waterfronts which provide a range of relaxation, recreation opportunities and marine related work.  The project aims to get more local residents and visitors to go to Port St Mary and Port Erin regularly.  It also hopes to improve the success of the economy for both villages.

The consultation aims to take a comprehensive look at people's attitudes to Port St Mary and Port Erin, and includes an on-line questionnaire, street consultation, focus groups and collaborative meetings with local organisations and residents.  Details of consultation meetings are included below.

Street surveys will take place in Port St Mary, Port Erin, Castletown, Douglas, Ramsey, Laxey and Peel, as well as at Ronaldsway Airport and the Sea Terminal.

To take part in this important questionnaire and help determine Port St Mary and Port Erin's future please visit http://www.costainheritage.com/ and follow the link.

When the consultation has closed there will be an exhibition to present the findings to residents in January, which will be followed by a report to the South-West Regeneration Committee.
